A hand-made picó sound system, built in the Netherlands to traditional Colombian measurements and painted by renowned Colombian picó artist William Gutiérrez Peñaloza, this vibrant sound system will be pumping out heavy sounds from across Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. This one is vinyl only with Lady Avocado, Amancai and a very special guest joining us on the decks – to be revealed soon.
Lady Avocado, a Colombian DJ and vinyl selector from Barranquilla now based in Barcelona, blends Afro-Caribbean roots, tropical grooves and psychedelic rhythms into energetic live sets.
Amancai, hailing from Cartagena and co-founder of Zaperoco, her sets move through Champeta, Cumbia, Salsa, Soukous, Zouk and Compas, drawing on the rich musical exchanges between Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America.
Co-founded by Amancai, Movimientos and FLAWA, Zaperoco takes inspiration from the picó sound-system culture of Colombia’s Caribbean coast, from the huge hand-painted speakers and the energy around them, to the DJs, selectors and record collectors who have made these parties spaces for community, celebration and resistance, and who have historically sought out records from far beyond Colombia
Picós grew out of the barrios and fiestas populares, where people created their own spaces for joy, community and resistance away from the class-driven mainstream culture. They are much more than sound systems: they are a visual and musical part of everyday life and collective power.
