We team up with Jazz Cafe & Latinos in London to present a summer Sunday session dedicated to the colourful world of New York salsa in the company of Grupo Magnético, hailed as one of the most exciting new voices in Latin music.
Salsa has always been intrinsically tied to the Big Apple, ever since the 50s when a huge Cuban population emigrated to New York to escape the revolution of their homeland. That then paved the way for the birth of New York salsa over the subsequent decades, becoming one of the city's most notorious and universally loved genres in the process.
An eclectic group of musicians from South America and the UK, Grupo Magnético were drawn together by a mutual love of 1970s salsa and an obsession to pay homage to the music of their heroes.
Their debut album Positivo, released on highly acclaimed Scottish label Athens Of The North, has been met with universal love from DJ’s worldwide including, Radio 6’s Gilles Peterson and Craig Charles and has been included in many music critics highlights of 2018. Tracks including ‘Vampiras’ and the bands cover of ‘Papa Was a Rolling Stone’ have become hits in salsa clubs as far afield as New York and Cali, Colombia and Positivo.
