Movimientos welcome live acts from the UK Latinx scene as well as special international guests from Colombia in what is undoubtedly set to be a rare and memorable treat. The Bonita House Band continue their collaboration with Ecuadorian singer Cristian Abel with their explosive brass fuelled interpretations of the Afro-Ecuadorian Bomba del Chota rhythm and Cumbia, amongst a melting pot of other Afro-Latin influences. We also welcome very special guests from Colombia, as Marimbea present ‘Jaiba’: a showcase of Pacific coast AfroColombian sounds centered around the Marimba del Chonto. Featuring musical director of Bejuco, Marimbea’s Adrian Sabogal as well as some special guests from the London. Plus Montañera makes her Movimientos debut, one of the most unique voices in all of Colombia, whose music mixes electronic sounds with traditional Colombian music and indie pop influences.
On the decks we welcome guest selector Mafe Maracuyeah who’s inspiring, high powered sets mix traditional Latin American rhythms and electronic music, all firmly geared towards the dance floor.
Marimbea
Marimbea is a cultural project that works directly with the Pacific coast communities in Colombia and they have put together a very special live show for London audiences. The show will be centred around the Marimba del Chonta – the regions’s most emblematic instrument – with the incredible Cankita the musical director of Bejuco currently one of the finest expressions of Afro-Colombian sounds from the Pacific coast and featuring Marimbea’s Adrian Sabogal and some special guests from the London
Marimbea is an organisation that generates “alternative sources of income for its inhabitants [of the Pacific], enabling knowledge exchanges, and cultivating support networks for its cultural agents.” By creating cultural experiences both within the region and across various cities in Colombia, Marimbea uses the culture of the Pacific Coast to educate those living outside of the region.
Montañera
Certainly one the most distinctive voices in all of contemporary Colombian music, Montañera makes captivating and luscious music. Behind the ethereal beauty of her indie/pop beats, driven by myriad Latin rhythms, Montañera has made her way onto some of the world’s most remarkable stages. From SXSW in Austin, Texas and MAMA Festival in Paris, to such gilded halls as the Smithsonian Museum and Kennedy Center, now finding her way for the first time to Hootananny in Brixton to grace our humble stage with her illustrious presence and magnetic music.
The Bonita House Band ft. Cristian Abel
The Bonita House Band last appeared alongside Cristian Abel at Bonita & Movimientos’ celebration of Ecuadorian Independence day in August, and by all accounts it was a night of absolute heat from everyone involved. Bonita is a collective dedicated to highlighting and celebrating the massive diversity of Latin American music, always fighting to rescue old sounds and highlight the new. They are purveyors of quality Latin beats, and their house band is here to bring you that ear for flavour and fun live!
They continue their collaboration with the incredible Ecuadorian singer Cristian Abel to bring you their fascinating and bodacious interpretation of the Afro-Ecuadorian Bomba del Chota.
