JM y Juanin & Los Cracks del Puerto

31.07.2018
#FLAWA2020 has prepared a night of non-stopping dance with Ms Nina, a young multidisciplinary artist from Argentina currently based in Spain. She achieved international recognition as a net artist, exhibiting at Junior High (Los Angeles), La Térmica and La Fresh Gallery, one of the most prestigious galleries in Spain. Her musical career has made her one of the key figures to understand the Latin rhythms that sound in Europe.
Movimientos welcomes JM y Juanin & Los Crack del Puerto to the Vortex for their debut London show! Coming all the way from Chile these guys give their classic sound a new life.

Juanin Navarro and JM are legends in Valparaiso, Chile, recently receiving an honor of living heritage from their hometown city. Known as the capital of bohemian lifestyle in South America, “el Puerto” (as it’s commonly referred to) has seen ships and sailors come and go for hundreds of years, bringing with them sounds and nightlife from around the globe.

Juanin—who will turn 80 this year—began performing the hits of the day in 1955, and continues to play the same classic boleros, tangos, vals peruanos, and cuecas to a new generation that is just discovering the vintage gems. Every Sunday afternoon in the mythical Quinta de Los Nuñez, he is joined by JM—his youthful cousin, who turns 73 in October—and the rest of the Cracks del Puerto as they run through a repertoire of songs that range from tear-jerking boleros of lost love to everybody-up-and-dance cuecas extolling the virtues of drinking too much wine on never ending nights in the hills of Valparaiso.

These stately gentlemen have performed the same numbers tens of thousands of times, but with a recent resurgence in Chile of these largely forgotten sounds, the two cousins have embarked on a new phase of their career, at a time when most people would be thinking about retirement. Rarely leaving their neighborhood in 70 years, they have now recently traveled to France and Argentina, up and down Chile, and will soon be making their UK debut at WOMAD 2018. Juanin spent 30 years on the day shift as a policeman, and JM over 50 years at the local farmer’s market with his family selling garlic. Yet the nights have always belonged to the music, and there are few living connections to the past as bright and entertaining as Juanin and JM, and the Cracks del Puerto.
