Conjunto Media Luna (Colombia, solo set) x Malphino (London, jam set)
An epic live session of cumbia jams as London’s Cumbia pioneers Malphino are joined by one of Colombia’s finest multi instrumentalists Ivan Medellin aka Conjunto Media Luna! As the latest addition to the Meridian Brothers’ band set up, Bogota based Conjunto Media Luna’s Ivan is coming to London for the first time for a very special solo live set, He’ll also be teaming up with musicians from Malphino, London based multinational cumbia band, to offer you an unexpected cumbia experience upon traditional vallenato, cumbia, and Afro Colombian rhythms from the Caribbean coast.
Conjunto Media Luna
Conjunto Media Luna was born in the midst of the 2020 lockdown as a project of experimentation by musician and producer Iván Medellín (Romperayo, La Sonora Mazurén), whose main inspirations were the accordion music of the Montes de María region in Colombia and the new cumbia aesthetics in the context of cities in Latin America and the world such as Bogotá, Monterrey, Buenos Aires, San Jose California, among others. These aesthetics have not only been sonic but have also involved image and photography of the band. The musical foundation of Conjunto Media Luna is the traditional accordion, vallenato or alegre drum, guacharaca, and bass format, but their timbre explorations have led them to incorporate synthesizers, samplers, and drum machines into their sound.
Malphino
Malphino are a multinational cumbia band that have flown the cumbia flag in London for the last 10 years. Over this time they have released 1 EPs (Catapulte) 1 album (Lex Records) and single with (Names you can trust) and a single featured on CoCo Maria’s compilation Club Coco (Bongo Joes) with a new EP coming out and a new album on its way.
Their inspirations come from a mix of accordion Colombian cumbia, Mexican Rebajada sound systems, Peruvian Chicha as well as Martin Denny Exotica, and cosmic organ sci fi scores. Malphino is not just a band but a place, and mystical isle where everyone is welcome and you can see from the artwork and visuals is the gateway into this tropical island where you dance away your troubles while the sun sets over the volcano of mount Lalango.
