DAY OF THE DEAD FUTURO

01.11.2014
#FLAWA2020 has prepared a night of non-stopping dance with Ms Nina, a young multidisciplinary artist from Argentina currently based in Spain. She achieved international recognition as a net artist, exhibiting at Junior High (Los Angeles), La Térmica and La Fresh Gallery, one of the most prestigious galleries in Spain. Her musical career has made her one of the key figures to understand the Latin rhythms that sound in Europe.

What better way to celebrate Mexico’s Day of the Dead fiesta this November than by inviting some souls from outer space!

This year Day of the Dead goes futuro with screenings of vintage Mexican sci fi films and other futuristic events across venues in South East London. Movimientos and Celluloid Circus present three classic Mexican Sci fi films from the 60s at Brixton’s Ritzy cinema. Starting on Saturday lunchtime with a special family screening of Julian Soler’s The Flying Saucers, to combine with our children’s futuristic costume-making and Day of the Dead face-painting workshop at Brixton’s Number 6 community venue earlier in the day, this is the riotous story of a young couple who are mistaken for aliens when their car crashes after a fancy dress party.

That same day, there’ll be a late night screening of Mexican classic The Ship of Monsters from an original 35 mm print. This tale of two voluptuous Venusians who trawl the universe searching for male specimens to take back and help repopulate their planet is a unashamed mash up of sci fi, western and horror genres, and also combines with a Day of the Dead Futuro fiesta also to be held at Brixton’s Number 6.

This year Movimientos and Celluloid Circus have teamed up with the good folks from Wahaca Brixton to put on a Saturday night futuristic fiesta that’s guaranteed to invoke the spirits of the dead from every planet! With a stellar sci fi Latin American style soundtrack from Malphino, the lunar sounds and brass fanfare invasion of Voodoo Love Orchestra, a sci fi twist on traditional Day of the Dead dance and theatre performances, sci fi and Aztec visuals and decor, DJ Cal Jader (Movimientos) back to back with Oscar Arroyo (Chilango), Mexican face-painting and more, this promises to be one unforgettable space odyssey. Complimentary Mexican street food will be served by the Wahaca Street Kitchen and the bar will be stocked up with Mexican beers and Olmeca Altos tequila margaritas!

To finish off the Day of the Dead weekend in style, our last film at the Ritzy on Sunday afternoon is another Mexican sci fi classic you won’t want to miss: Santo vs the Martian Invasion, again on a 35 mm print: when Martians chose to invade the Earth, only the supernatural strength of Mexico’s foremost lucha-libra wrestler Santo can protect them, KA POW!

The screenings are part of a weekend of events in the Brixton community as part of BFI’s Sci Fi season Days of Fear and Wonder, brought to you with O2, supported by Film Hub London, managed by Film London and proud to be a partner of the BFI Film Audience Network, and is presented by Celluloid Circus & Movimientos - the producers behind last year’s sold-out Dia de los Muertos Experience at Rich Mix – and supported by Wahaca Brixton. Prepare for an inter-galactic sci fi extravaganza, as Day of the Dead goes futuro this with screenings of classic Mexican sci fi films, children’s futuristic costume-making and Day of the dead face-painting, live music acts, DJs, dance, immersive theatre performances, authentic Mexican market food and plenty of tequila in a cross-arts weekend guaranteed to be out of this world!
