Having grown up a Londoner to immigrant Colombian /Italian parents, it’s clear that Desta makes no compromises when it comes to the cultural dualities that live and breathe within her music. A blend of RnB, Latin Jazz, Salsa, Cumbia, Hip- Hop, and more which culminate to form her very own distinctive sound. A passionate performer and songwriter, her position in the U.K. scene is unique. She is the first U.K. born LatinX artist to have an entirely Spanish song played on BBC Radio, supported by prominent tastemakers like DJ Target and Jamz Supernova as well as selling out the Jazz Cafe in 2020 which was a groundbreaking moment for the Camden native, as well as for the community who all showed up for the unforgettable moment.
She spent the first half of the year living in Mexico City, where she performed at numerous festivals and has begun forming a solid fan base as well as a bed of new collaborators. This has heavily influenced the sonic landscape for her upcoming singles which she will be performing for the first time with her newly formed band, Los Milagros.
Desta represents her culture not only through her music, but her cultural endeavours, like her involvement in the ‘Bonita’ movement which was formed with fellow Colombi- an-born producer Alma De La Selva. She also spent some time in San Antonio, Texas finding out more about ‘Tejano’ music which has formulated some of the narrative surrounding her first independently funded documentary which will be out in 2024.
Although Desta has achieved a lot in a world where there has been no blueprint for a UK born Latin artist making fusion music, she has certainly carved out an important trajectory and we have a strong feeling this is just the beginning.
