Manu Chao / Native Spirit Show review by Oscar Reyes

manu chao live at hootananny - brixton/london

The Manu Elixir

Manu Chao and the Radio Bemba Sound System
Hootananay, Brixton, Saturday 19 July

‘La lucha sigue!’ It is 3am on a Saturday night and Manu Chao is in a Scottish pub in London, dedicating a Mexican song to the Indigenous Peoples of Latin America. The struggle continues, he says. But it is rare to hear those words spoken in an atmosphere of such collective joy..........

MANU CHAO ROCKS NATIVE SPIRIT BENEFIT EVENT!

manu chao live at hootananny - brixton/london

On Saturday July 19th 500 people crammed into a secret gig at a local Scottish pub in Brixton to see Manu Chao and his band Radio Bemba play in support of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas. Hosted by Movimientos, the night featured live music and documentary films and raised funds for the Native Spirit Foundation.

This was, certainly for Londoners, a truly unique opportunity to see Manu Chao in an intimate setting, a far cry from huge festival headline slots and stadium tours. The band sweated and poured every ounce of energy into their performance finally finishing at 3am, after a truly exhilarating hour and a half show.

Three fantastic bands had already set the tempo for the night to an excited crowd. Kogui (Colombia), Kausary (Peru), and Ambaibo (Bolivia) featuring musicians from all over Latin American, played a vibrant mix of rhythms rooted in indigenous music.

Proceeds from the event will go to Native Spirit Foundation to help fund autonomous educational projects for children in indigenous communities and to support communities in their struggle to maintain their culture and land.

Radio Revolucion

Radio Revolucion play Latin Reggae-Ska Punk with strong influences from London underground sounds like Jazz, Drum’n’Bass and Dub. They mix their music with fiery lyrics in the name of conciousness, rebellion and party in the true spirit of their idols Joe Strummer and Manu Chao.

Originally created in 2004 by Jurgi, Ruth and Julian gigs in Berlin and at the Carnaval Del Pueblo in London followed. Last year drummer Christina and Trumpet player Rowan Porteous joined the band and they have since played in the Refugee on Films festival and alongside DJ Manu Chao himself at a recent secret party hosted by cultural organisation Movimientos.

“Oddjob brought their unique brand of Afro-Latin flavoured jazz to the stage and within minutes had the huge crowd eating out of their hands. By the time the sax led outfit reached the end of their performance the crowd were crying out for more!!"

Widescreen are a 3-piece electronic/flamenco global beat act. Originated by the 70's Prog/Classical Guitarist David Clark Allen of Carmen fame. Their music is a fascinating mix of Classical Spanish Flamenco, Mediterranean and eastern European groove and electronic beats. At times it seems quiet purist and then it will magically shift into the outer-worldly yet always flowing always remaining exciting and uplifting. Since their beginnings last year they have already supported Ojos De Brujo, Eliades Ochoa and Buena Vista Social Club!! Expect something special from this fast rising group.

Latin Dub Sound System

The Latin Dub Sound System is about big bass lines, carnival rhythms, and that moment when the music just makes you want to lose control. It’s a genre defying live sound that incorporates Latin percussion, house-driven melodies, dub beats, uplifting vocals, flamenco guitars, Mambo horns and hip hop.
